Just a little heads up and info for those of you that are having any problems whatsoever.....in regards to the battery leaking...and associated rusting of front battery compartment etc etc.I bought a new JD 790 in Feb 2001.....and a couple months later had the a forementioned leaks.I had read some earlier postings about other 790 owners and their troubles with leakage and rusting.......but as I recall ....at least in some of the cases..there appeared to be no resolve.Well I took my problem to the JOhn Deere dealer where I purchased the tractor.....and they checked into it for me.Good news.......John Deere knows all about it and wil R E P L A C E and/or R E P A I R any defective parts including the battery and all rusted parts at their cost.In my case..the battery, all cables..battery tray...clamps brackets, pretty much everything inside where the battry hides...was replaced. So don't put up with any of those problems.....they are all covered..

I have a 4200 that wouldn't start after a few weeks non-use. While jump starting it I noticed lots of corrosion on the battery posts and into the oil cooler as well.

My dealer said they are aware of the problem, and now have
a replacement battery cap with a vent hose that funnels
the gases away from the radiator.

Even though my tractor is a couple of months out of warranty, they agreed to replace the oil cooler, and prorated the battery.

I'd suggest everyone take a look at their battery and
change to the new vent cap design to avoid this problem.

I have a JD 790 w/ about 100 hrs. It's 1 yr old. It wouldn't start one day.
I looked under the hood and the battery and cables were completely
corroded. The local JD dealer came out and replaced battery and cables
and put in for a refund from JD. It came back today as denied. They didn't
give me a reason. Is this really something that the dealer or JD are aware
of? Has this happened to many others? Could it have been just a case of
the dealer filling the battery up too much? Thanks in advance for any help.

As I mentioned in my previous posting from last October..."my John Deere Dealer" replaced everything for me..all at no charge....as with your case..at firstmy service person had no clue what it was all about...some digging and research later...along with some digital photos that my dealer took of all damaged parts....sent them to area rep....and short while later...repairs were effected...as I recall the tab was in the area of $350 to $400 when all was said and done....don't give up...if you still are having problems ...next time I see th boys at John Deere I will ask them if there is some factory bulletin that was published....
good luck.....Glen ....

I have a JD790 also, now around 175 hours, 2000 model year. Dealer has provided me 2 replacement positive battery cables (under warranty), both times the clamp portion was eaten up. I found it easier to take him the cable and replace it myself instead of taking the tractor to him or taking off time to wait for him to come to me. I have also had trouble with the battery losing charge after sitting a while. Just replaced it with a DieHard this past weekend. Used a Diehard because it was free when I replace the tires on our mini van. Mini van already had a less than year old battery. ....
